Menopause is not just hormonal.
It’s historical. Cultural. Political. Personal.
In a recent episode of The Stay Juicy Podcast, Dr. Arianna sat down with Omisade Burney-Scott to explore what she calls the Menopausal Multiverse — a powerful framework that expands how we understand midlife health.
Too often, menopause care in the United States has been reduced to a narrow medical script: hot flashes, night sweats, hormone therapy. But menopause does not happen in isolation. It happens inside bodies shaped by decades of lived experience.
Who Is Centered in the Menopause Conversation?
We must ask:
- Whose stories are told?
- Whose experiences are validated?
- Whose care is prioritized?
Biology does not operate independently from identity, culture, stress exposure, or access to care. When we flatten menopause into symptoms alone, we miss the full human experience.
Weathering and Generational Stress
The concept of “weathering” reminds us that chronic stress leaves biological imprints over time. For many women — especially Black women — menopause intersects with decades of systemic pressure, caregiving demands, and accumulated stress.
Understanding this context changes how we approach care. It requires nuance. It requires cultural competency. And it requires listening.
Reproductive Justice in Midlife
Reproductive justice does not end when fertility does. Bodily autonomy extends into midlife and beyond.
At Tula Wellness, we believe menopause care must be personalized, inclusive, and grounded in both science and lived experience. Hormones matter — but so does context.
