Menopause Isn’t a Destination—It’s a Journey

Midlife woman walking a winding path outdoors, symbolizing the menopause journey and personal growth during perimenopause and postmenopause.

Menopause Isn’t a Destination—It’s a Journey

Somewhere along the line, we were sold the idea that menopause was a single moment. A finish line. A “poof—it’s over” event. But let me tell you something straight up: that’s a myth. One of the biggest. Menopause isn’t a destination—it’s a journey. And like any journey worth taking, it’s winding, personal, and filled with both detours and discoveries.

At Tula Wellness, I’ve met countless women who come in expecting a big shift to happen all at once. They’ll say, “I’m not in menopause yet—my period just stopped last month,” or “I had labs done and my hormones were normal, so I guess I’m fine?” But here’s the truth: menopause is not a box you check off. It’s a chapter in an unfolding story.

What the Journey Really Looks Like

Let’s clear up the roadmap:

  • Premenopause is your regular-cycles era—nothing fancy here, just your baseline rhythm.
  • Perimenopause is the storm before the calm. It can start up to ten years before your period ever fully stops, especially for Black women. Irregular cycles, PMS that hits like a freight train, brain fog, weight gain, night sweats, and sleep drama often show up in this phase.
  • Menopause is technically just one day—12 months after your last period. That’s it.
  • Postmenopause is everything after that milestone—and yes, symptoms can absolutely persist.

But let me be clear: your body doesn’t follow neat timelines. There is no sharp “before and after.” This is a hormonal evolution. One that impacts your mind, body, and spirit—and deserves more than a shrug or silence.

Your Experience Is Yours

One of the most important things I can tell you? There’s no “normal.” Some women breeze through these transitions with barely a ripple. Others—myself included—ride the wave for years. If you’re somewhere in between, that’s valid too.

This is your journey, not your sister’s, your mom’s, or your best friend’s. Don’t compare. Instead, tune in. What is your body whispering? What does it need today? Some days it’ll be sleep. Some days it’ll be boundaries. Some days it’ll be a little estrogen and a whole lot of compassion.

Midlife Isn’t the End—It’s the Invitation

This isn’t about getting through it. This is about becoming through it.

Menopause is an invitation—a rite of passage that asks you to evolve. To let go of what no longer serves. To redefine who you are, what you want, and how you care for yourself.

In my book, Jewels for the Journey, I share guiding principles—gratitude, acceptance, patience, purity, prayer, vision, silence, love, service, and discipline. These are the tools I’ve leaned on when the road got messy, confusing, or even magical.

You don’t arrive at menopause. You move through it. With grace, with grit, and if I have anything to say about it—with juice.
