Intense pulsed light therapy, or IPL, is an effective treatment for diminishing the appearance of unwanted dark spots. The procedure involves the use of broad-spectrum light energy. Darker tissues absorb the penetrating light waves and are damaged. The result is a shedding of the damaged cells in favor of newer, healthier ones. The same process can be used for IPL hair removal. We have found that IPL is extremely effective in the damaging of active hair follicles that are significantly darker than the skin in which they exist.
Removing Unwanted Hair
This can be accomplished by laser therapy, waxing, and several other treatment procedures. Lasers are rather effective, but they have some downsides. The idea is to damage the follicle itself so that it will become inactive and eventually be discarded by the body along with other waste material. Hair follicles go through an active phase followed by a resting phase. This means that in a given area of skin surface, some of the follicles are active and producing hair cells while others are not. It may take several IPL hair removal treatments to achieve the desired result because only active follicles are dark enough to absorb the light energy.
We use a handheld instrument to perform the procedure. Before we start, we calibrate the instrument according to the skin tone, skin thickness, depth of the active follicles and their specific color tone. The darker the hair strands, the darker the follicle.
During the actual IPL hair removal treatment, the device is pressed against the skin and the lamp flashed for about a millisecond. After a series of pulses, the device is moved to the next treatable area. The absorbed energy literally destroys the follicles’ ability to produce hair.
