Barbara Cooper, NP, CNM is a nurse practitioner and certified nurse-midwife actively working in women’s health since 1986. She is passionate about her work as a healer, harnessing the body’s innate ability to heal when it is honored and well taken care of.
Barbara started her career as a midwife, graduating in 1986 from Seattle Midwifery School as a Licensed Midwife. She graduated from Frontier School of Nursing and Midwifery in 1991 as a certified nurse-midwife and nurse practitioner. She has practiced midwifery and GYNE care in numerous settings including Tucson’s freestanding birth center and Planned Parenthood. Additionally, Barbara is a certified health and nutrition coach (graduate of the Institute for Integrative Nutrition), and a certified yoga instructor (graduate of the Satchidananda Ashram in Virginia).
For the past 15 years, Barbara has worked primarily as a women’s health clinician and nurse practitioner, with a focus on women’s wellness and well-woman gynecology. She has many years of expertise in contraceptive counseling and management. Barbara provides testing and treatment for STDs, UTIs, and vaginitis, as well as Paps and well-woman exams. Unlike well-woman exams elsewhere, Tula offers the opportunity to delve deeper and to schedule further visits that tackle preventative care; staving off illness before chronic disease has a chance to wreak havoc.
Integrative gynecology at Tula focuses on the roots of illness, striving to find the
underlying cause of disease and working with the body’s innate power to heal when
provided proper nutrition and health-promoting lifestyle modifications. Thorough
evaluation of one’s diet, habits, and lifestyle is combined with comprehensive lab
testing. Working in concert with a motivated client, specific guidance on food choices, exercise, supplements, lifestyle shifts and self-care are counseled. We have seen dramatic changes in labs, weight, overall wellbeing with, often, just small changes.
Care is one-on-one, personalized, compassionate, and in depth. Integrative gynecology practice at Tula focuses on all stages of a woman’s life, with emphasis on peri-menopause and menopause, sex hormone and thyroid hormone balancing and sexual health and vitality. Women report feeling better, looking better and feeling strong and empowered as they regain control of their health and wellbeing.
Tula’s Sexual Health and Vitality Program offers help with sexual dysfunction issues,
stress and urge incontinence, vaginal dryness, decreased libido and problems with
sexual response. With the help of modalities such as ThermiVa (radiofrequency vaginal rejuvenation), hormones (either local or systemic or both), and counseling, sexual vitality CAN be restored. Many women have given up on a fulfilling sex life, but grieve this. We have numerous testimonials from women who have reclaimed their sexual
satisfaction and are delighted to have this joy back in their life. This is a common
request for help from many of our clients and we offer this in a safe, woman-honoring, private and comfortable setting. We also carry a full line of empowerment tools and lubricants.
Barbara enjoys helping women reach their optimal health, happiness and fitness goals. Tula offers a comprehensive weight loss program and health and nutrition coaching to those who might benefit from this one on one guidance. Weight loss is achieved with a healthy low-glycemic load, anti-inflammatory diet. Options of weight loss medication can be added for those who want some help to kickstart their weight loss.
Barbara has two grown children , Tristan and Heather. She is an avid hiker,
photographer, cyclist and traveler who aspires to play piano well and speak Spanish
fluently in the near future.
